Urban Studies Programme
This programme presents students with the opportunity to study and research
the worldwide phenomenon of rapid urbanisation from a multi-faceted interdisciplinary
perspective. This programmes has two sub-divisions: Modern Urban Studies
and Studies in Social Change. The former analyses the urban city itself,
and the latter analyses various problems of urban cities and the process
of urbanization such as population, land, housing, transportation, distribution,
waste processing, environment, poverty, crime, unemployment, aging, and
consumer problems.
The sub-division of Modern Urban Studies consists of the fields of Urban
Policy, Urban Society and Culture, and Asian Urban Societies. The sub-division
of Studies in Social Change consists of the fields of Social Structure,
Regional Development of Societies, and Social Dynamics.
To fulfil degree requirements for being granted a Ph.D. in the arts, literature,
sociology, law or economics, students are expected to be in residence at
the graduate school for at least three years and must complete a minimum
of 12 credit units and successfully complete a Ph.D. dissertation, which
in the final stage is evaluated by a dissertation board. In certain cases,
accelerated completion of degree requirements within one or two years may
be possible, depending upon the approval of the advisor and committee.
