Scholarships for Foreign Students
1 "Japanese government scholarships"
1) Recommendation by Japanese Embassy
The Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) requests its overseas diplomatic establishments to advertise study in Japan on a Japanese government scholarship and to conduct the preliminary selection of candidates. This preliminary selection consists of (1) selection based on submitted academic records and personal history, (2) a written examination and (3) an interview. The Japanese diplomatic establishment then recommend candidates for scholarships based on the results of the above selection process to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology which makes the final decision.

2) Recommendation by Chiba University
Chiba University may recommend students who fall within the following categories to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).Note that MEXT average approval rate of government scholarship is approximately 50% and university recommendation does not guarantee approval.
(1)Students who are recommended by our sister universities pursuant to the exchange agreement.
(2)Students who are recommended by the dean, the director, or the person in corresponding position at a university overseas which has an exchanging record (but not necessarily an exchange agreement)with Chiba University.
(3)Students who are recommended by the President of Chiba University and expected to significantly contribute to education and research at Chiba University.
2 Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Honors Scholarships for privately financed international students
Through universities JASSO offers Honors Scholarships for privately financed international students who display excellence in their academic work and character and who are recognized to be in need of economic assistance during their stay in Japan. These scholarships are provided for enrolled students and the number of scholarships is limited.
To apply for JASSO Honors Scholarship for privately financed international students, candidates should register by submitting the prescribed registration form.Newly admitted students should submit the form in the end of March.Existing students should check their registration period and deadline.
3 JASSO Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program (inbound)Scholarship
This is a scholarship provided for exchange students who are enrolled in an overseas sister university, sent from it under a student exchange agreement and study at a sister university in Japan for six to twelve months.
This scholarship is awarded to the students studying at Chiba University sister universities overseas and participate in our short-term student exchange (J-PAC)program.Relevant information and application forms are available at students home universities.
4 Private organization and other sources of scholarships
Private organization and other provide scholarships for self-supported foreign students who are already engaged in study in Japan. Chiba University is notified of some 40 scholarship schemes every year, however the number of these scholarships is limited.
Note that while one can apply directly for certain scholarships, to apply for those scholarships which require university recommendation a candidate has to register on the prescribed form and submit it within the prescribed period every year.Newly admitted students should submit the form in the end of March.

Self-supported foreign students who wish to apply must have been registered by submitting Registration Form(pdf) in advance with the International Students Division. A new student registers itself in March. Chiba University will rank registered students and make scholarship recommendation based on the selection criteria.
Students who choose to bypass Chiba University and apply for scholarships directly do no need to register.
