JAPAN Program at Chiba (J-PAC)
In October 1996, Chiba University inaugurated its Japan Program At Chiba
(J-PAC) under which students of Chiba University exchange partners have the opportunity to study
in Japan for six to twelve months from October each year. To be eligible, students
must be enrolled in an institution of higher education that has concluded
an inter-university student exchange agreement with Chiba University. The
agreement should allow credit transfer and waiver of tuition and fees for
application and registration. Students accepted into the program must agree to return to their home institution
upon completion of the exchange program.
J-PAC has three academic programs. The annual number of participants stands at about 35.
(1)Japanese studies program (Program 1)
(2)Undergraduate exchange (Program2)
(3)Graduate exchange (Program3)
The aim of Program 1 and Program 2 is to offer those undergraduate students who have already learned Japanese
the opportunity to study more about Japan. Program 3 is designed for graduate students who have chosen to study in
their specific fields.
The following (1) to (3) are the explanation for Program 2.
(1)The applicant must have completed at least one year of undergraduate course work and have spent at least 150
hours learning Japanese at the time of application.
(2)Students must take a minimum of six credit courses per semester. Those who have completed six credit courses each
semester will receive a certificate of completion.
(3)The courses listed below (Subject to change), except Japanese language courses and Research Work(Japanese Studies),are taught in English.
The duration of all courses is one semester. All courses, with the exception of Japanese language courses, meet once
each week for 90 minutes.

Note: For subjects offered in the academic year 2007 - 08 and further information
see "Course Descriptions" sent to the Study Abroad Office of
Chiba University's Exchange Partners. Detailed syllabi of the courses will
be distributed at the beginning of each semester.
* Center for International Research and Education offers a total of 35 Japanese language courses
at eight difficulty levels. The courses are as follows: Japanese 1(elementary,
two levels), Japanese 2 (intermediate, four levels), Japanese 3 (advanced,
two levels). Course allocation is done through a placement test (compulsory)
at the beginning of each semester in April and October. The language of
instruction in all the courses is Japanese.
The fall semester of J-PAC starts at the beginning of October and lasts
until the end of February and includes a two-week winter-holiday break
that starts in late December and runs to early January. J-PAC students
are requested to arrive at Chiba on the first day of Fall Semester. The orientation will be held during the following week.
Japanese students, called 'tutors' will help you adjust to the life in Japan.
Spring break, which lasts all through March, is a good chance for you to
explore Japan on your own. The spring semester starts in April and runs
until the end of July. The summer recess includes August and September.
Students stay at Chiba University International House in single rooms,
which are furnished with a bed, desk, kitchenette, and shower and toilet.
The monthly rent is 5,700 yen. In addition, a one-time payment of 15,000
yen must be made when moving in. The International House is located in
Inage, one short train stop from the university.
J-PAC accepts application only through the Study Abroad Office of CHIBA UNIVERSITY'S EXCHANGE PARTNERS. For further information, please contact the Study Abroad Office of your
own university.
