Tuition

1. Tuition, admission, and entrance examination fees

Tuition must be paid by the designated deadline each semester (in April for the Spring semester, and in October for the Fall semester) by automatic electronic withdrawal from the bank account¹ of you or your financial supporter. Newly admitted students can pay the fee by wire transfer to Chiba University's bank account for the first semester.

MEXT (Japanese Government Scholarship) students are generally exempt from tuition, admission, and examination fees. At the end of the MEXT scholarship period, certain conditions apply to entrance exam and admission fees upon proceeding to a higher degree course.

Students on the J-PAC program are exempt from tuition fees.

The necessary fees are indicated in the table2 below. Plan your budget accordingly. If you have any questions, ask ISD.

- ¹Automatic Electronic Withdrawal is a system in which the fee assigned by the payee (University) is automatically transferred to the payee's bank account from your bank account on the designated date. You need to register your (or your financial supporter’s) bank account information to the university upon admission to set up this system.

2. Tuition waiver application

It is the student’s responsibility to plan academic and living expenses for studying in Japan before entering university. However, if unpredictable or unavoidable circumstances arise that make it difficult for you or your financial supporters to pay the tuition fee, you may apply for a tuition waiver each semester. Note that not all applicants will be granted the waiver. Automatic withdrawal of the tuition fee from your bank account will be suspended until the application result is announced.

a. Types of waivers

- -full waiver:
  - Students are exempt from full tuition fees for one semester.

- -half waiver:
  - Half of the tuition is waived. The remaining half must be paid by a student.

- -extension of payment deadline:
  - Students are responsible to pay the tuition fees, but are given a grace period to complete the payment.

- -installment payment:
  - Students are allowed to pay their tuition fees in monthly installments.

b. Who can apply

- -if you are not able to pay the tuition fees due to financial reasons but are keeping good academic standings

- -if you are not able to pay the tuition fees due to financial reasons but are keeping good academic standings

- -if your financial supporter dies within 6 months before the payment deadline

- -if you or your financial supporter experience natural disasters that cause serious damage within 6 months before the payment deadline

- -if you have other reasons which the university finds appropriate for you to apply

c. When to apply*

- -for Spring Semester: February ~ March

- -for Fall Semester: July ~ September

- *You are responsible for obtaining information about the exact deadlines and required documents needed to be attached to your application at Student Support Division.
