Invitation of Applications for Tenure-Track Positions
at Chiba University 2010

Chiba University has established the "Chiba University Young Research-Oriented Faculty Member Development Program in Natural Science Areas" in 2008, a program supported by Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.
In FY2008, a total of ten researchers at Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Horticulture and Graduate School of Engineering, and in FY 2009, one researcher at Graduate School of Science were appointed at the special tenure-track positions through international recruitment.
We are inviting applications for a special tenure-track position (at the rank of Associate Professor) in the research area specified below for a 5-year term, ending March, 2015. We are recruiting a young researcher who has all the qualities necessary to become a future leader in electronic structure study in complex molecular group. Both research and comprehensive leadership abilities (planning skills, organizational skills, motivation, analytical skills, etc.) will be evaluated during selection.
An appointee will be provided with laboratory space, startup budget, and research funding as well as funding to hire a support staff. They are, in principle, exempt from various committee and administrative work, but are encouraged to take part in educational activities at the graduate level. Promotion to regular faculty positions will be decided through reviews conducted annually and at the end of the period of appointment.

1. Number of positions and research area:

A special tenure-track position, affiliated with the designated graduate school, will be offered in the following bioscience area.

Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science
Electronic Structure Study of Molecular Assemblies

The Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science is seeking a young scientist as a special appointed researcher (in principle as a special appointed associate professor) who is eligible to be independently engaged in research on organic molecule aggregates and electronic structure on the related interface, and breakthrough of electronic functions, such as charge transport in organic semiconductors and energetics at related interfaces in order to promote researches at the Global COE program, "Advanced School for Organic Electronics".
The above mentioned gOrganic Molecule Aggregateh involves aggregates ofƒÎelectronic systems and bio-related molecules such as DNA, which are expected to have electronic functions, and those molecules adsorbed on electrodes. Model molecule systems that are required to clarify those functions are included as well.
We are interested in applicants with expertise in new research areas not currently represented in our graduate school, as well as applicants who enrich existing strength of the global COE areas.

The appointee can conduct the research in collaboration with faculty member(s) of Department of Nanomaterial Science, Division of Nanoscience, Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science, if necessary. Refer to the faculty members at our web site.

2. Qualifications:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree (or a corresponding degree) and should be highly qualified in the research area specified above. Several years of postdoctoral research experience, but not more than 10 years at the time of appointment in principle, as an assistant professor, research associate, or postdoctoral fellow in academia or industry, is highly desirable.
Applicants are also desired to have willingness to give classes in English or Japanese, by the end of the appointment for promotion to regular faculty positions.

3. Selection:

Selection will be made in two steps. The first step is evaluation by Selection Committee at Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science based on the application documents submitted. Those who pass the first step will be called for an interview. The final decision will be made by the Evaluation and Selection Committee for Special Tenure-Track Positions, which includes people from outside Chiba University. According to the criteria, Chiba University will promote opportunity for woman if the assessment of educational and research achievements is comparable.

4. Research environment:

The following research expenses are to be provided: from eight million yen up to 10 million yen as startup expenses (including expenses for laboratory renovation etc.) in the first fiscal year; from five to seven million yen in each of the second and following fiscal years that includes to hire a postdoctoral fellow. The global COE program will support research expenses.

5. Terms of employment:

Fixed-term employment until March 31, 2015.
An annual salary of 5 to 8 million yen (including housing expenses) will be paid during the employment period depending on her or his research experience.
Evaluation will be conducted annually, with a final evaluation at the end of the term. The decision to hire the appointee as a regular faculty member will be based on these evaluations.

6. Application documents:

(1) Application Form (Down load)
(2) List of publications (classified into papers in refereed journals, reviews, books, patents, etc.)
(3) Representative publications, not exceeding 5
(4) Summary of previous research contributions (use 10.5 point font, up to 2 pages including figures)
(5) Research plan at Chiba University (use 10.5 point font, up to 2 pages including figures)
(6) Your ideas on undergraduate and graduate education (use 10.5 point font, 1 page)

7. How to apply:

Make PDF files of application documents (1) to (6) above and attach them to an e-mail sent to the address below. Include the words "Application for special tenure-track position" as the title.
Personal information is protected by the relevant Japanese law and the rules of Chiba University. Although your application is kept secret, inquiry may be made to the references specified in the Application Form.
