All activities will be conducted in English in this class. The course is particularly suitable for those who are planning to study abroad, either short term or long term as it covers skills and language needed for study in an English-speaking country. We will be covering critical thinking skills such as categorisation, analysis and evaluation. We will also focus on listening skills. Each unit of the textbook contains two listening texts dealing with the same topic from different perspectives as well as related videos from Discovery Learning. Students may be asked to listen to other related media outside the class. Each week includes a speaking focus, which uses the skills and language introduced during the class.These speaking activities will include short debates, discussion in pairs or small groups, presentations, either in front of the class or within a small group and a variety of tasks that will need to be completed in groups. As mentioned above, all these activities will take place in English. As well as the above, there will be a focus on language development. The textbook makes use of the Cambridge Learner's Corpus, a collection of language actually used by native speakers. For those who need extra grammar and vocabulary practice, an online workbook is available. Finally, students in need of IELTS scores will find that many of the listening and speaking tasks follow the IELTS test format. Writing tasks can be arranged for those who need to practice their writing and for students taking Toefl iBT, tasks can be provided. |
